The congregation of the Sisters of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary founded in 1903 in England, traces its origin from the French religious institute founded in 1866 by Father Victor Braun. Our early sisters served the poor in the industrial cities, towns and villages throughout England, Scotland and Wales. Our first Irish foundation was made in Cork in 1922. Since then the congregation has spread to California, Zambia, Colombia, El Salvador, Uganda and the Philippines.
The purpose of our congregation is to bring the love and compassion of the Sacred Heart of Jesus to all those we meet in our service of love.
Our mission is to be a transforming presence in those areas of the world where the poorest of God’s people are so often forgotten and excluded. We are a group of women, living and working around the world, sharing a common vision, to create a better world for God’s people. As Sisters of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary, all our communities are communities for Mission. The Christ of the Gospels whom we follow is always to be found in those places where pain, hunger, intolerance and hatred tear apart the lives of people. Our mission calls us to where injustice causes such suffering in our world today. We are particularly sensitive to women and children; people with special needs; and to vulnerable and marginalised people who are denied the fullness of life.
In all our work we are conscious of those most in need and our approach to ministry reflects this.
