The Congregation of the Sisters of Notre Dame des Missions was founded in Lyons, France, on Christmas Day 1861 by Euphrasie Barbier. Her concern was for the poorest and most abandoned in her day, especially the education of children and women. By degrees, new missions were established in every continent of the globe. As sisters retired from education, other ministries were undertaken with the shortage of vocations in the Western world, the focus has now shifted to the East and to South America and Africa, where our sisters contribute to the development and building up of people there.
