To encounter Christ in Prayer, to serve Him in the Poor with love

The Little Sisters of the Poor were founded in France on a winter’s night in 1839, by Saint Jeanne Jugan, who opened her heart and her home to a poor blind old lady. Today we are an International Congregation, who have dedicated our lives to the service of the elderly, on 5 continents, in 31 countries.

The spirit of the Congregation is the evangelical spirit expressed by Jesus in the beatitudes. When Jeanne Jugan opened her home to the first old lady, she received Jesus and said ‘yes’ to His call. There was no turning back, the limits of her room together with those of her heart had exploded. They had been thrown open to embrace the world.

Being Contemplative in action, we are strengthened by an intimate and personal love of Christ, nourished by our daily participation in the Eucharist, along with personal and community prayer.
